The 15th seeded team FGCU (Florida Gulf Coast University) shocked the world when they won against favored second seed Georgetown Hoyas in the first round. Not because a number 2 seed team lost the first round of the tournament, but the athleticism and talent on the FGCU Eagles team.
The dunks, alley oops, the play making, the crossovers, the fun the Eagles bring to the court is phenomenal and 7 seed San Diego St could not handle it any better than the Hoyas did as they lost by 10 (final score 81- 71).
Eagles shot for 56% in the paint as Sherwood Brown scored 17 (6-8 FG, 2-3 three pointers, 3-4 FT) and Bernard Thompson with 23. Teamwork in the 2nd half blew San Diego St out the water as they went on a 16 – 0 run, plus the 21 assists and 13 steals in the game.
During the overall 2012-13 season, the Eagles were averaging 73 points per game, 36.6 rebounds per game, 14 assists per game and a 46 field goal percentage.
They made history becoming the lowest seed to EVER make it to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament. The lowest seed to ever reach the sweet 16 were 14th seeded teams and that was in 1986 with Cleveland St.
It’s going to be a Florida battle in the Sweet Sixteen as FGCU will have to play 3 seed team, the Florida Gators.
