NFL To Put Computer Chips In Footballs This Season

Kevin Selfert, of ESPN, announced that the NFL will be putting data chips in footballs this 2016-17 season. The games selected will be 2016 preseason and Thursday night games.

The reason for the chip is to determine the impact of shorening the distance between the goal posts according to John Kryk of the Toronto Sun. They want to “measure how close extra-point and filed goal attempts come to the upright”.

The chips can also help with ball placement as the league has been discussing this for years.

NFL quarterbacks told the league, once informed of the chip, to also make sure the balls don’t behave differently than regular footballs.
