Yes, you heard right. Reports from NY Post confirms that NYC’s Mayor de Blasio is going to shutdown Rikers Island, a correctional facility with around 10,000 inmates. It is one of the world’s largest correctional institution and mental institution.

They will be building five new jails across the city and cutting down half of the inmate population. Jobs will be lost for the 10,500 correctional officers. The draft version reports it will bring it down to 3,700 officers.

The draft shows the new jails will hold 5,500 beds. The cost is $10.6B and the location for these prison is unknown at this time.
