A 24-year old man named Dayne Jones was found dead, hanging from a tree by a bedsheet in his family’s backyard on October 17 in St. Louis. Police claim that the untimely death was due to a suicide but his mother, Melissa McKinnies, says it’s murder.

“He was in good spirits. What it appears to be to us is that somebody took my son,” said McKinnies. She believes this was retaliation.

“They watched my house and when my husband and my son would approach the car, they would drive off,” she told KMOV-TV. She says that her family received death threats related to her protest work that involved the Michael Brown shooting.

According to the family per CBS News, Danye had bruises on his face and the bed sheets did not come from their home. “Saying that he committed suicide, no, you’re going to respect him,” McKinnies said.

This is not the first death involving Ferguson activist. In 2016, Darren Seals was found dead inside a torched car and so was DeAndre Joshua in 2014.

Police are still investigating.
